What Is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis permanently removes unwanted hair by treating individual hair follicles with a very fine sterile probe and a controlled amount of electrical energy.

How electrolysis works

During treatment, a very fine sterile probe is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft. A small amount of electrical energy is then delivered to the follicle’s growth tissue. After an effective treatment, the hair is removed gently from the follicle.

The probe follows the follicle’s existing opening; it does not create a new opening in the skin. Treatment is performed one follicle at a time, which allows the practitioner to target individual unwanted hairs precisely.

Electrolysis has been used for permanent hair removal for well over a century, and modern electrology uses refined equipment, sterile probes and carefully controlled treatment settings.

Three established treatment methods

Galvanic

Galvanic electrolysis uses direct current to create a chemical reaction within the follicle that destroys hair-growth tissue.

Thermolysis

Thermolysis uses alternating high-frequency current to produce heat in the follicle and disable the tissue responsible for hair growth.

Blend

The blend combines galvanic and thermolysis currents, using both chemical and heat action in the follicle.

The most appropriate technique and settings depend on the hair, treatment area, skin response and practitioner assessment.

Why does permanent hair removal take multiple appointments?

Hair does not all grow at the same time. Individual follicles move through repeating stages of active growth, transition and rest, and only some of the hair in a treatment area will be visible and available for treatment on any given day.

For that reason, electrolysis is a process rather than a one-time procedure. Consistent appointments allow newly visible hairs to be treated as they enter an appropriate stage. The overall treatment schedule varies substantially from one person to another.

Factors that may influence the treatment program include the amount and structure of hair present, the body area, previous tweezing or waxing, heredity, hormonal influences, certain medications and how consistently recommended appointments are maintained.

All hair colors and skin tones

Electrolysis does not depend on pigment in the hair in the way light-based hair-reduction technologies do. It can therefore be used on dark hair as well as gray, white, blond and red hair, and it can be performed across skin tones.

This makes electrolysis particularly valuable for individual hairs or treatment areas where laser or IPL may not be suitable or effective.

Electrolysis and laser are not the same thing

Electrolysis and laser hair treatment work differently. Electrolysis treats follicles individually and is used for permanent hair removal. Laser and IPL use light absorbed by pigment and are generally described in terms of long-term or permanent hair reduction.

Some clients choose electrolysis from the beginning. Others turn to electrolysis for remaining hairs after laser, for light-colored hair that does not respond well to laser, or when precision treatment of individual hairs is desirable.

What does treatment feel like?

Sensation varies by person, body area and treatment settings. Many people describe a brief feeling of warmth, a small pinch or a momentary sting as energy is applied. The probe insertion itself should follow the natural follicle opening rather than feel like the skin is being punctured.

Comfort will be part of the consultation and treatment-planning process. Appointment length and treatment settings can be adjusted as appropriate for the area and individual tolerance.

Common treatment areas

Electrolysis is commonly used on unwanted facial and body hair, including the chin, upper lip, jawline, neck, eyebrows, ears, underarms, chest, abdomen, back, arms, hands, legs, feet and other suitable areas. Treatment availability for particular areas will be confirmed before the practice opens.
