Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal: What’s the Difference?

Electrolysis and laser are both used for unwanted hair, but they work differently and have different strengths. Learn what separates permanent hair removal from permanent hair reduction.

Electrolysis and laser hair treatment are often discussed as though they are interchangeable. They are not. Both can be useful, but they use different technology, have different limitations and are described differently when it comes to long-term results.

How electrolysis works

Electrolysis treats hair follicles individually. A very fine sterile probe is placed into the natural opening of a follicle alongside the hair shaft, and a controlled amount of electrical energy is applied to the tissue responsible for hair growth. The treated hair is then gently removed.

Because the practitioner is treating the follicle itself rather than targeting pigment, electrolysis can be used on dark hair as well as gray, white, blond and red hair. It can also be performed across skin tones.

The American Electrology Association describes electrolysis as permanent hair removal and explains the galvanic, thermolysis and blend methods used in modern practice.

How laser hair treatment works

Laser hair-removal systems use light energy. That light is absorbed by pigment in and around the hair follicle, where the resulting heat damages structures involved in hair growth. Because pigment is part of the mechanism, hair color, skin color, device wavelength and treatment settings all matter.

Modern laser systems can be used on a wider range of skin tones than older technology, but very light, gray, white and some red hairs remain poor targets because they contain little or no melanin for the laser to absorb.

FDA-cleared laser devices commonly use the term permanent hair reduction. In FDA device documentation, permanent hair reduction is defined as a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs that regrow after a treatment regimen. That is different wording from permanent removal of an individually treated follicle.

The shortest version

Electrolysis: treats follicles one at a time and does not depend on hair pigment. It is used for permanent hair removal.

Laser: treats many hairs over a larger area using pigment-targeting light. It is commonly used for long-term or permanent hair reduction.

When electrolysis may be especially useful

Electrolysis is often a particularly good fit for gray, white, blond or red hairs; small areas of unwanted facial hair; isolated coarse hairs; eyebrow shaping where appropriate; and hairs that remain after a course of laser treatment.

It is also useful when precision matters. Because the electrologist treats individual follicles, specific hairs can be removed while nearby hairs are left alone.

When laser may make sense

Laser can be attractive when someone has a large area of dense, pigmented hair and wants to reduce the overall amount of hair relatively quickly. A laser pulse can affect multiple follicles at once, so large areas can often be covered much faster than they could be treated one follicle at a time.

Suitability depends on the hair, skin, device and provider. A qualified laser professional can evaluate whether a particular hair and skin combination is a good candidate.

Some people use both

The decision does not always have to be electrolysis or laser. Some people use laser first to reduce a larger amount of dark, coarse hair, then use electrolysis to permanently remove remaining hairs—especially light hairs that laser cannot effectively target.

Others choose electrolysis from the beginning because their hair color, treatment area or personal goals make individual follicle treatment the better fit.

What about facial hair?

Facial hair often contains a mixture of colors and textures and may be influenced by heredity, age or hormones. Electrolysis can be especially useful for scattered chin, upper-lip, jawline or neck hairs because the practitioner can address the individual hairs that are actually unwanted.

For anyone considering treatment, a consultation should focus on the actual hair present, previous removal methods, treatment goals and realistic expectations rather than assuming that one technology is automatically best for everyone.

A note about terminology

Hair-removal advertising can use the words “permanent,” “removal” and “reduction” loosely. When comparing providers, ask what technology is actually being offered and what result is being promised. Needle electrolysis and laser hair reduction are different procedures.
